DEVELOPING AN ENGLISH SYLLABUS FOR THE TENTH GRADE OF VOCATIONAL SCHOOL AT SMK FARMASI SURABAYA : A PROPOSED DESIGN

Developing a Standard English Reading Syllabus for the Tenth Grade of
Vocational School of SMK Farmasi Surabaya is important because the school still
do not develop the syllabus yet. This syllabus is helpful for the school to establish
the studentsí English reading competencies and to determine the success
indicators of the English teaching and learning process. For the teachers it is to
make specific reading lesson plans in line with the competencies, to develop
teaching materials, and to design the evaluation contents. This syllabus
development is based on the theory of Steven J. Mc Griff being well-known as
The procedure employed in this developmental study are conducting
analysis, designing the proto-syllabus, developing the pedagogical syllabus,
implementing the syllabus in the classroom, and evaluating the results of the
syllabus being implemented. The information needed for the analysis to design the
syllabus is gathered through questionnaires (for the students and alumnus) and
interview (for the schoolís staff and English teachers).
The analysis shows that reading has the highest degree of the studentsí
interests in the Tenth Grade of SMK Farmasi Surabaya. The subjects of the
syllabus tried out were the students of the academic year 2010-2011.
The developed English Reading Syllabus perhaps could be used for the tenth
grade students of SMK Farmasi Surabaya. The basic competencies of the syllabus
developed in this part are: able to describe medicine, medical appliances, times,
days, dates, month, and year; able to cope with transactional situation of everyday
life requiring a largely predictable use of language; able to understand the new
term, words and simple sentences; able to understand simple information.
An English teacher should give elicitation before giving practice exercises
provided in each unit of the reading syllabus, develop the reading situations
provided in the syllabus as long as the students are still interested in the topics,
given explanation in bahasa Indonesia is still needed because the students are too
difficult to understand in fully English explanation. In short the developed English
reading syllabus materials focus on understanding text and passage in line with
their jobs in the future.
