A STUDY ON USING STICK FIGURES IN TEACHING VOCABULARY AT THE FIFTH GRADE OF SDN SIDOKUMPUL 2 GRESIK

Using stick figures is more vivid than words and much easier to recall. Related to the matter, the writer is interested in studying the use of stick figures for teaching vocabulary at Elementary School. Hence, the research questions were formulated as: (1) How does the teacher apply stick figures in teaching vocabulary at fifth grade of SDN Sidokumpul 2 Gresik?; (2) What are the effects of using stick figures in teaching vocabulary at fifth grade of SDN Sidokumpul 2 Gresik? The writer used descriptive qualitative research in doing her study. The writer described and analyzed the existing phenomena during the teaching learning process. The subject of this study was the English teacher at the fifth grade of SDN Sidokumpul 2 Gresik. Moreover, there were three kinds of instruments used in this study. They were observation sheet, interview and documentation. The research was conducted in three meeting. They were 5A class, 5B class and 5C class. In every meeting, the teacher gave a worksheet. The topic that was given by the teacher in each meeting was same, it was about time. From the result of the study, the application of stick figures help the students learn vocabulary, especially remember and memorize words. Furthermore, the students were really enjoyed learning vocabulary by using stick figures, and the students are more actively to ask and answer question related to apply of stick figures. It showed that mostly students interested in using stick figure to teach vocabulary was really helpful in memorizing. Here, the writer suggested for teacher, it was important to practice the all ways of using stick figures in teaching vocabulary. The teacher should use three various ways of using stick figures to teach vocabulary. They were asking question, guessing game and cooperative activities. The next researcher can continue this research as an experiment research or action research
