In Indonesian context, teachers rarely teach speaking. They focus more on the teaching of reading and grammar. In fact, Indonesian students study English in order to develop proficiency in speaking. Related to the importance of speaking, students should practice speaking English if they want to increase their speaking ability. Unfortunately, finding opportunities to speak English in a country in which English is not as native language can be difficult for the students. Therefore, SMP N 1 Gresik tries to improve students’ ability in speaking through conversation in international standard class. In fact, students have many problems in delivering their ideas.
This thesis was conducted to answer research problem: “What are students’ problem in speaking?” and “What are students’ strategies in overcoming speaking problems?” The subject of this research was 60 students of 8th grade of international standard class at SMP N 1 Gresik. The data were collected using questionnaire, interview and observation. Questionnaire was used to find out students’ opinion about their problems in speaking and their strategies in overcoming speaking problems. The information about students’ problems in speaking, strategies in overcoming speaking problems and effect of applying those strategies to their speaking problems was also provided in detail by giving interview. Observation was conducted to know the real fact when communication strategies used by the students to overcome speaking problems.
This study found that many students had more than one speaking problem. Lack of support was the main problem faced by the students; the next problem mostly happen was peer pressure and less motivation. In order to minimize the problems, students applied some communication strategies. This study found that most students tried to ask help from others. It could be teacher or friends. Other strategies were applied only as an alternative. However, by applying those strategies, students could speak English in classroom and they could make conversation keep going on.
