A STUDY OF DIRECTED READING-THINKING ACTIVITY (DR-TA) IN TEACHING READING AT X GRADE OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Reading is one of the important skills of English where the students should master it. So they can follow teaching learning process and they can use it in their daily life. The aim of teaching reading is to help students become better readers. The Strategies that can help students read more quickly and effectively include: Previewing, Predicting, Skimming and scanning, Guessing from context, and Paraphrasing. The researcher is interested in studying the use of Direct Reading-Thinking Activity to teach reading at XGrade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Gresik.
The researcher conducted a study dealing with the implementation of Direct Reading-Thinking Activity as a reading strategy in teaching reading to achieve the two goals; (1) to know the implementation of Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA) in teaching reading at X grade of Senior High School, (2) to know the problems does the teacher have in applying Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA) during the process of teaching reading.
The design of this study was descriptive qualitative, the methods of collecting the data in this research are observation and interview. The subject were the teacher and the students of X-5 of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Gresik. The observation checklist and semi structure interview were the instrumentsí tools to collecting the data.
Having analyzed the data, the researcher can conclude that the teacher of X-5 of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Gresik used Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA) as a strategy in teaching reading. The teacherís activities related to the steps of Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA) were choosing the text, activating the studentís prior knowledge, asking the students to make prediction, reading the section of the text and asking the students to confirm or revise prior prediction (discussion). In implementing Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA) Strategy the problem of the teacher was could not found the strategy which can increase the studentsí ability in vocabulary mastery. To solve the problem, the teacher tried to found the good strategy to teach vocabulary and applied it in teaching learning process.
Finally in order to develop the finding of this study, the researcher suggests that the teacher needs to found the good strategy to teach vocabulary mastery in order to make them easily in making prediction and did not need much time to think and shared their thinking.
