THE USE OF ICE BREAKER TO IMPROVE STUDENTSí MOTIVATION IN LEARNING ENGLISH AT THE FOURTH GRADE OF SDN RANDUAGUNG IV GRESIK

Motivation is needed in teaching and learning process, whether the students have it or not, it can influence their ability. Motivation also can decide whether the students can reach the goal or not in their learning process. Students who have high motivation will easily reach their goal or success in learning process, but for those who have low motivation in learning, it might be difficult to be success. There are many things to improve studentsí motivation in learning but in this study, the researcher intends to apply ice breaker to improve studentsí motivation.
In this study, ice breaker is used to improve studentsí motivation because of the problems that appeared in the class such as; boredom, tired, less enthusiasm, and unwillingness to study. Therefore ice breaker is expected to bring better changes in the English class.
The design of this study is an action research and the subject is the fourth grade of SDN Randuagung IV Gresik containing of 50 students (21 male students and 29 female).
The data of this study was collected on six meeting by applying ice breaker in doing observation and giving questionnaire. During the observation the researcher was helped by the English teacher to note the activities during ice breaker implementation and learning process. The notes in every meeting were included into diary journal.
The findings of this study according to the daily notes for six meetings of observation showed improvement of the studentsí motivation. The improvement of motivation according to the teacherís note reaches to 44 % total numbers from the first until the sixth meetings. From the questionnaire which was given after the implementation of ice breaker, the studentsí motivation mostly high. It is showed from the result of questionnaire and the calculation. There are 32 % (16 students) have high motivation, 24 % (12 students) have very high motivation, 10 % (5 students) have medium motivation, 16 % (8 students) have low motivation and 18 % (9 students) have very low motivation.
From these results can be concluded that ice breaker brought better changes to the students and it is able to improve studentsí motivation in learning, besides that the process of teaching and learning also can run well.
