THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CONTEXTUAL TEACHING AND LEARNING (CTL) IN TEACHING ENGLISH VOCABULARY AT SIXTH GRADE OF SDN PONGANGAN GRESIK

Vocabulary is an important in language learning, especially in learning English as foreign language. Successful of learners in learning language depends on how many vocabularies they can master. In this case, the teacher needs the good strategy to the students by giving some variations in teaching English vocabulary. For this reason the writer was eager to conduct the research especially focused on the teaching English vocabulary by using Contextual teaching and learning (CTL). Related to the matter, the writer is interested in studying the use of CTL to teach English vocabulary at VI-D Grade of SDN Pongangan Gresik. Hence the objectives of the study were formulated as follow; (1) To describe the implementation of CTL in teaching English Vocabulary in the VI-D grade of SDN Pongangan Gresik. (2) To find out the problems that could be aroused during the teaching learning process. (3) To find out the teacher‟s way to solve the problem in implementing CTL in teaching English Vocabulary.
The writer used descriptive qualitative research in doing this study. The writer described and analyzed the existing phenomena during the teaching learning process. The subjects of this study were the teacher and the students of VI-D grade of SDN Pongangan Gresik. Moreover, there were 2 research tools used in this study. They were observation check list, and interview guide.
From the result of the study, the teacher implemented sixth componetnts of CTLin teahing English vocabulary. They are constructivism, inquiry, questioning, learning community, modelling and reflection. Besides that, the teacher has some problems in implemented components of CTL. They are inquiry and learning community components. In addition, the teacher‟s solved the problems in applying CTL by aware and respond to all students by controlled and walk to the students‟ table.
Finally in order to develop the finding of this study, the writer suggests in addressing those problems. The teacher should classify students in a group. It made the atmosphere of classroom more alive, the writer also suggests that it will be better if the next researcher observe and conduct another research in the same field or study with difference subject or other kinds of skill. It realized that this study is far from perfect. Thus, some related studies conducted with the same area needed.
