THE USE OF WFR (WARMING UP FOR READING) TO IMPROVE STUDENTíS READING COMPREHENSION FOR EIGHTH GRADE AT SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 07 CERME

This study was conducted based on the preliminary study in SMP
Muhammadiyah 07 Cerme which showed that the students had difficulty in
reading recount text. In fact, the studentís score was low. The average score
obtained from pre test was 50 and the passing grade (KKM) for English lesson was
75. It means that the students could not achieve the standard minimum of the
school.
This study was conducted in SMP Muhammadiyah 07 Cerme. This study
aimed to improving reading comprehension in Recount text by using WFR
technique at eighth grade in SMP Muhammadiyah 07 Cerme. The design of the
study was Classroom Action Research. The researcher was accompanied by a
teacher partner. This research was conducted in one cycle which was divided in
four main stages, planing, acting, observing and reflecting.
The research finding showed that this technique was effective to teach
reading comprehension for eighth grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 07 Cerme. The
studentís average score in pre test was 50. The score improved in post test. The
studentís average score in post test was 81.
Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that the Warming up
For Reading (WFR) could improve studentís reading comprehension, because the
strategy made students were enjoy in reading, so that the students could understand
the text and they could answer the questions well. It was proved by the result of the
test that the researcher did in this study which showed that the studentís score
increased until reaching the passing grade. It meant that the strategy could solve
classroom problems.
Based on the research findings, two suggestions are provided. The first, the
English teacher is recommended to use WFR technique in teaching recount text.
The second , the next researcher who wants to conduct a research using multimedia
are recommended to conduct this research in different areas and levels.
