IMPROVING WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT USING SILENT WAY AT 8TH GRADE OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SMPN 1 DUDUKSAMPEYAN GRESIK

Language is one of the crucial aspects of human intelligence for expressing their feeling, mind, emotion and ideas. As we know English in one of the international language that is used by the people around the world, that is the cause English is very important be taught to Indonesian people in both oral and written forms. English is used as a communication tools in the world because of that it is important one for Indonesian learners to study and master of this language not only in speaking but also in writing but he learners often find difficulties in expressing their idea in both aspects. It has been proved in teaching and learning activities. The learners canít use it in real communication activities in a real situation, and they are still passive therefore this research tried to improve studentsí writing narrative text using Silent Way and fairy tales as the media that are used in teaching and learning process.
The purpose of this study hopefully can improve the studentsí ability in writing narrative text and give English Language knowledge to the students so that they become active, creative and easy to express their idea in writing narrative text.
The subject area of the study is 30 students at the 8th grade of SMPN 1 Duduksampeyan Gresik. They are the total of the students in one class. The instrument used to collect the data is an essay test which is used for the researcher to measure the ability of the students in composing writing narrative text based on the generic structure.
The research design which is used in this study is action research which uses a cyclic or spiral process. Each cycle consists of four steps. The researcher conducted the research only in one cycle which is done in seven meetings.
The result of the test can be analyzed and showed that there were 66.6% of the students or 20 students had got the score above 69, they can fulfill the Minimal Completeness Standard in English lesson, and the average score in this class after the process was 75.03.
The score before this study showed only 30% or 9 students had got above 69 and the average score in this class before the process was 62,5.
From this data the researcher evaluated the results of analyzing the data in this research. In comparing the data before and after the research. After the researcher implemented Silent Way method, there were 66.6 % or 20 students from 30 students got above 69 and 66.6% or 20 students had fulfilled the Minimal Completeness Standard in English lesson especially in writing. The average score in this class after the process was 75.03.
Based on these data, when the researcher compared the score before and after implied the method, the result of the research that studentsí ability in writing narrative text increased. It could be seen from the data differences found during the first cycle.
From the data above the researcher concluded that there was a significant result and it was enough to answer the problem from this research in the first cycle, it meant that this research has been enough to reach the target of the research so that the researcher doesnít need to continue with the next cycle.
