THE DIFFICULTIES IN CONSTRUCTING NEGATIVE AND INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES IN WRITING FACED BY THE FIFTH YEAR STUDENTS OF MI MIFTAHUL HUDA

Writing English is very essential to face the globalization era. So that, it becomes one of language skills that is taught in elementary school. In writing, students frequently find difficulties in constructing sentences especially negative and interrogative sentence. It can be caused of the differences between Indonesian structure and English structure. The purpose of this study is to find out the studentsí difficulties in constructing negative and interrogative sentences (yes-no question and WH- question) in writing. The subject of this study is the fifth year students of MI MIFTAHUL HUDA.
Descriptive qualitative is used in this study to describe what are the studentsí difficulties in constructing negative and interrogative sentence. Human instrument and test are used as the instrument in this study. And the researcher used test and questionnaire in collecting the data. After researching, the researcher found that the fifth grade students of MI Miftahul Huda had difficulties in using 5 aspects (do, does, am, can, and must) in negative sentence. And the most errors were classified as incomplete application of rules. In constructing yes-no question, they had difficulties in 8 aspects of sentence (do, does, am, is, are, will, can, and should) and the most errors were classified as overgeneralization. And also they had difficulties in using 6 aspects of sentence in building W-H question (do, does, is, are, will, and can) and the most errors were classified as incomplete application of rules.
By knowing this result, the teacher should change her writing teaching technique to be more fun and enjoyable. Besides, the teacher also should give more fun exercises related to those area. For the students, they should be careful,
learn the material, and try to write negative and interrogative sentence as often as possible.
